MINI ESSAY: When You Aim For Humility You Miss Every Time

Humility isn't self-degredation.  It isn't self-deprecating or self-effacing.  Humility isn't about self at all.

This concept keeps coming up for me. Do you hold back pieces of yourself because you don’t want to “appear prideful?”

I do.

It isn’t humility. It isn’t humility to hide our strengths, to downplay our gifts, to pretend we are less than we are - it is pride. Maybe the most dangerous kind - the kind of pride which masquerades as humility.

If you are doing this, quit it. Knock it off. Bring all of yourself to the table because it isn’t yours anyway and God didn’t give it to you to hide, to keep to yourself.

Look up and look around. Who do you see? Who needs what you have? Think of them.

Let’s have less “I don’t want to appear prideful” and more “what can I give away?”

Mini Essay: CAN’T HURT A DEAD MAN
No one can hurt a dead man.  No one can offend the dead man.  No past act can be rustled up, no accusations hurled, no insult whispered to hurt us.  We are free from ego when we die - separated from that thing which kills us from the inside out.  When we die, we lose all self-protectiveness.  We lose the need to guard and shield and hide.  We are to die to ourselves - to murder and bury our ego - so we may live as we were made to live - FREE.

"There is something of a civil war going on within all of our lives.  There is a recalcitrant South of our soul revolting against the North of our soul.  And there is this continual struggle within the very structure of every individual life."  MLK Jr.

"If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it." - Jesus

What little thing can you do today?  What little kindness, what little comfort, what little gift can you give to another human?

Go Do Something Little.

Make a ripple, cause a crack, speak a word, and trust it will go on, it will spread, it will echo.

Go Do Something Little.

Chances are, a thousand little things will leave a bigger impact - a better legacy - than the one thing you're saving up for, than the one opportunity you hope will come.

Go Do Something Little.

We don't need to be millionaires.  We can make a thousand people smile.  Make a thousand people's day.  Make a thousand people stand up straighter.

Go Do Something Little.

On those days when you realize your own mortality, when your existence feels minuscule in light of eternity, you will inventory what you've done with your limited time here on this spinning planet. And it is the thousand smiles, the thousand days made, the thousand people walking taller - it is these you will cling to.

Go Do Something Little.

Mini Essay: WHERE THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS, THERE IS FREEDOM

The Spirit is in us, the same spirit that rose the dead to life and healed the near dead and multiplied food by the thousands. It is in us, moving and speaking and guiding and praying..A piece of eternity, a connection between us in the world and the whole of the Kingdom.Because we are no longer of the world, we are merely in it. Not immune to the pain and suffering the world offers - just sure of what we hope for, certain the story ends well, invested heavily in the Kingdom, and free from the weight of the world’s chains..Where the Sprit is, there is freedom. It lives in you - live free.

MINI ESSAY: I Am His Exclusive Possession

John 10:3 in the NASB reads “. . . he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”

The word translated into English as “His own” was translated into Arabic (in the version I am reading) as “خاصة.” (Khassa). In my dictionary, the first translation to English of Khassa is “exlusive possession.”

The original greek word (idia) being translated here doesn’t necessarily convey the meaning of “exclusive possession,” but it doesn’t NOT convey it either.

The word (idia) is also used to describe someone’s own family, home, or other possessions in other parts of scripture.

I like “exclusive possession.” I think it drives home the point, in my own heart, that I belong exclusively to Christ – always have – even when I rejected him, even on days where I reject His authority, I belong to Him and to no one else. I am exclusively His, from the beginning of time and through all eternity.

MINI ESSAY: Faith Without Works Is Dead

Faith without works is dead.
But be wary the difference between works gathered, crafted, sought out and those works which bud as a result of our abiding in him.
The former works result from faith.  The latter are a distraction.
When we are consumed by works of our own initiative we impede the Holy Spirit from his work in us, and the good works we might have produced are never afforded the opportunity to flower.
We call our works "fruit" but the fruit is only good and an indication of our spiritual life when it is hanging off of a branch grafted into and abiding in our savior.  Otherwise, you have gathered - you have not produced.
Those ugly wretches we talked about in the "Be You" series - Comparison, Competition, Cowering - they will get us here.  They will snag us, snare us, draw us in and away from our place of abiding.
(COMPARE) That branch is producing "x" and I'm producing "y."  I better go gather some "x."
(COMPETE)  That branch is producing more "x" than I am.  I better go gather some more "x."
(COWER) I should be producing "z," but no one else is - I'll go gather some "x" instead.
You have your own works, your own fruit, your own path and purpose to which you were called.  Zoom out and and out and out until you can see your works set against eternity - until it becomes clear how small and insignificant they are without the context of God's story, God's plan, God's purposes.
Zoom out and then lean in - because you do have work to do.  Work with meaning, work which fits into a bigger picture, a bigger story, and you can't hope to know what it is or do it His way if you are not leaning in.
Zoom out.  Lean in.  Abide.
